Continuing the 4-issue series of stories adapted from H.P. Lovecraft's work, Tales From the Cthulhuverse #2: Dagon modernizes a classic story and adds a sexy twist.
The story is narrated by Callie, a young college girl from Miskatonic University who is at a precipice overlooking the ocean. The story begins with her foretelling her imminent fate, as well as the impending fate of the rest of humanity and the world. She flashes back to where it all began: a party cruise that she and her friend Michelle embarked on to forget about past loves and leave all inhibitions behind.
Soon Callie receives a text message from Dan, her ex-boyfriend, telling her there is some kind of weather event happening. Before she could react, the boat is struck by a monster wave. She finds herself stranded on a remote island where she encounters an ancient being - a god long forgotten - who repeats the word "Dagon" over and again.
Callie somehow escapes Dagon's grip and finds herself back home, and that's when strange events more strange events happen that send her into madness. She becomes aware of a cosmic presence that will destroy her and the entire world with it, and tragedy strikes as the story loops back to where it began.
The adaptation is quite gripping, taking a very cinematic approach to the classic tale of Dagon, and the colorful artwork captures the eye and entertains the mind. The artwork is overall excellent, with all of the characters, animals, and creatures depicted expertly in the style of Zenescope's best comics.
The expressions on the characters' faces are perfectly captured during each moment of frustration, anger, and shock, and the grim atmosphere of the story is true to the original. Dagon looks pretty darn cool, too. The comic is 22 pages and also features 2 pin-ups that could have served as variant covers. 5 out of 5 stars.
