A new series that promises to take classic mythos stories and transform them into modern day, sexy tales offers its first issue based on the classic story from H.P. Lovecraft: "The Thing on the Doorstep".The story follows a college student named Danielle (from Miskatonic University, of course), as she is interviewed for a horrible crime she committed but claims is not what investigators think.
She proceeds to tell the detectives about her college roommate, Eve Darby, and their close relationship. That is, they were close until Eve meets a college student named Asa who is wise beyond his years and seems to know everything about everything, from classic literature to cosmic theories. As Eve becomes more involved with Asa, Danielle begins to see less and less of her friend and decides to go see her at her new boyfriend's house.
There she witnesses a strange ritual and events take a twisted turn that will change everyone's lives - even the detectives' - forever.
The comic does an excellent job in taking the reader on the journey through strange events in a modern setting, providing beautiful visuals through skillful artwork, scene composition, and vibrant colors. At times the women don't look like college students, but rather older women in their late 50's or early 60's, but the overall composition is well-done. The ending is interesting and the story remains true enough to the original story, making this an excellent addition to any Lovecraft/Mythos fan. This is the first issue in a 4-part series, and I look forward to reading the next entry in the collection. 4.5 stars out of 5.
